This is a common problem. Rifling through various interior magazines, kitchen articles always adapt to the most spectacular photos from the large kitchen displays in the enormous surroundings. Of course they did. Small kitchens simply do not carry the same effect or allow the subject matter to be encapsulated in its entirety in the photo. The problem is that most homeowners stay with more, should we say, kitchen is ‘compact’ because this is the age of developing as small as possible space of pounds per square foot.
So builders always try to squeeze as much as possible to the smallest place. This is the world in which we live. However, small can be very beautiful as well as practical if designed and dressed properly. It can also give you more concentration on your favorite ideas and aesthetics without having to cover a large area with them. First, how do you feel about natural light? Do you get into a dark room and feel instantly uncomfortable if there is not much light or do you just like the low lighting gloom? If you have a tendency towards the latter, skip the next paragraph completely (actually, do not – there are some things that will still apply). More light = more space. So, the brighter you bounce around the smaller the room the better.
Lighter tones do this naturally, so aim for a pale color of your favorite color or stick to a simple white or cream color. Although the treatment is slightly higher, high gloss doors are great for small spaces because reflections add depth to the door and reflect the light you have. Going for integrated equipment lets you add more of this reflective door and create more shadows while creating a smooth effect and giving it a bigger look. Bring your splashbacks above the surface of your work into the game – consider using a mirror – this breaks up space and inexpensive mirrors. Much less, say, from colored glass or stone supported. High floor tiles are also a plus. Of course, you do not need to use all this in a small space, otherwise you may feel in the middle of the air.

Using these two principles in addition to contrasting surfaces such as multiple wooden doors, natural floor tiles or matte laminates will create a good balance and more attractive to the eye. Dark rooms do not mean they have to keep gothic covered. Quite a few kitchen lounges in the basement of a property with little or no natural light. Even then, some prefer dark tones when there is plenty of natural light. The key is that black surfaces such as nero granite or wenge cabinetry create a much more intimate space. The darker woods like Macassar Ebony & American Black Walnut make miracles in the small kitchen. Get this aesthetic right and the room becomes cosseting rather than claustrophobic. However, keep the tone in check.
Too much black (especially black matte) will make you attractive to your local caretaker, unless it’s your thing (black also shows more marks than the other surfaces!). One more thing – good artificial lighting is the key. Using recessed lighting above the unit adds more ambience than just having the spotlight hidden on the full beam. When it comes to storage, write down everything you need to keep. It can get to the last cabinet. If you have to carry all your equipment into this room including the washing machine and the tumble dryer then it is time to look into any available space-saving storage settings out there. Almost there is a solution for everything from the ironing board out to the stacking plate for the drawer. The best is the pull-out shelf that spends the entire dead space in a dusty corner cabinet. Try and keep an eye on everything ‘open’. By this I mean keep the distance between base and wall running without interruption, for example in galery kitchen. Paste the unit high at one end or corner first and plan the rest that leads from there. That way the room will give the impression of the best room without interruption. “
